Things you need to know about AHPRA before applying for registration

Australia provides world-class education in the field of healthcare. Every year, thousands of overseas students arrive in Australia to study in various healthcare courses offered by prestigious universities. Following the completion of your course, if you wish to become a healthcare professional in Australia you need to apply for AHPRA registration.
AHPRA stands for Australian Health Practitioners Regulatory Agency. Established to govern and improve the quality of health standard services across Australia, it ensures whether a practising nurse or who has just completed his/her study in Australia is adequately skilled and experienced. Nurses are registered in APHRA to practise their specific profession like Chiropractor, midwife etc.

Registration in APHRA has these following requirements-
  • Criminal history checks- both international and Australian
  • English language proficiency
  • Qualification in/equivalent to Australian degree
Here are some key elements to keep in mind while applying for AHPRA registration.
  1. Skills and experience
You need to outline your full qualification and work history. This should be included in a signed and dated CV according to the AHPRA requirements. You must also declare that the ‘The Curriculum Vitae is true and correct as on (the date)’. Only the original and signed CV would be accepted with certified copies of results or reports of performance.
  1. Getting approved.
If and once your application is processed and approved, a letter will be sent to you saying ’in principle approval for registration’, with a three-month validity. This means you have met your registration requirements. The final registration is subject to you providing the proof of identity requirement in person at any AHPRA office.
  1. Processing time
The processing time for an application ranges from a month to half a year. Certification and documentation are much longer procedures than people think. It would be better to apply for registration at least three months beforehand. If your application is immaculate, it will take three months to process it.
  1. Certifying your documents
A certified copy of an original document is accepted. An authorised officer should sign it. Only a handful of people outside Australia are authorised to certify documents. Like-
  • Justice of the Peace
  • Notary Public
  • Australian Consular Officer
  • Australian Diplomatic Officer
And accordingly, the cost of document verification will vary.
